2nd Annual Wisconsin Hazelnut Week

Hazelnut Week is back for a second year. This is your very best chance to learn about hazelnuts, kick the tires, and ask questions of those involved in breeding, production, harvesting, and post-harvest processing. Hazelnuts and Table Grapes Field Day

The field day will start with a short presentation from Jason Fischbach on where things are at with breeding and propagation. We’ll then tour the UMHDI Joint Peformance Trial featuring mature plants of the top genetics being developed for the Upper Midwest including material Grimo Nut Nursery, the UMHDI, and The Beast. After the hazelnuts we’ll visit the table grape trials to learn about some exciting new seedless varieties.

The Savanna Institute’s North Farm near Spring Green is site of the very first UMHDI Go-First Farm. This is your chance to see the new UMHDI cultivars in action. We’ll also tour the new 10-acre research planting. Our hosts will provide information on how they manage their large-scale agroforestry plantings and how hazelnuts can be integrated into other cropping systems via alley-cropping.

Twilight Tour Featuring Hazelnuts (and other crops)

The Spooner Ag Station’s annual Twilight Tour is a great opportunity to see what’s happening at the station and learn about a bunch of different crops and research projects. This year, the Tour will feature hazelnuts. We’ll see the 12 year old planting and the brand new 5-acre Go First Farm. You’ll learn everything you need to know about planting, managing, and harvesting hazelnuts.
Northern Wisconsin Hazelnut Field Day

One field day – three stops! At the first stop we’ll tour the oldest planting in northern Wisconsin in order to see mature hazelnuts. Our second stop will be at the Bayfield Go-First Farm where we’ll learn best practices for establishing hazelnuts. The last stop will be at Northland College where we’ll learn about processing hazelnuts into delicious kernel.
