Food systems and climate change prep for COP 28 in November
Several events, some accessible remotely
Heads of State and Government gathered at UN Headquarters in New York on 18-19 September 2023 to review progress toward the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is widely agreed that food and agriculture tie all the goals together, so several organizations are working together to raise the importance of food systems in the discussion. WWF International (Brent Loken), the Rockefeller Foundation (Sara Farley) and the Global Alliance for the Future of Food (Patty Fong) are leading the effort. CIAS is one of more than 80 participants on regular zoom meetings to build collective action toward making our food systems more resilient and just.
Six Action Labs met in New York to co-create narratives and action plans. They are:
- Energy and Food Nexus
- Agroecology and Regen 10
- Food, Nature, Finance
- Health and Nutrition
- Blue Foods
- Consumption and diets
Several events in New York City were recorded or summarized in preparation for the next global Climate Change Conference-COP 28.

Oliver Camp, Food Systems Transformation for Environment and Nutrition (GAIN), summarized comments on food systems prepared by nations, NGOs and others to be entered into the record at COP. Termed “The Global Stocktake (GST)”, these comments are part of the Paris Agreement, the international treaty aimed at tackling climate change. The GST’s goal is to determine if our collective efforts are sufficient to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives. Oliver provided hotlinks to the full comments and noted that the official synthesis report was already available to peruse.
