Over the past four years, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies PhD candidate, and 2021 CIAS Graduate Student Summer Research Mini-Grant recipient, Ana Fochesatto, M.A., conducted sustained community-based fieldwork, and over 150 interviews, with farmers, workers, nonprofit leaders, and government employees to understand how people are reimagining animal agriculture in the U.S. Midwest. In her presentation, she’ll share findings from that qualitative research as well as some of the ongoing, collaborative work they’ve been doing together to build more just and sustainable food systems. She’ll discuss what it means to pursue a just transition in animal agriculture, from land and labor to multispecies relationships and the everyday acts of care, struggle, and solidarity shaping these efforts.
Whether you’ve been part of this work as a participant, offered advice or encouragement, or want to hear about land, justice, migration, chickens and more… she’d be honored to have you there.
