CIAS Food Systems Scientist Dr. Lauren Asprooth uses AI podcasting to highlight the results of a recent publication in the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation titled “Our daily bread in the Heartland: Understanding and leveraging diversification to small grains in corn and soybean systems”.
The fictional “Dr. Rye” walks you through the benefits of small grain production for farmers and ecosystems, how we lost small grains in our rotations over the last 100 years, the main barriers and drivers of production according to a survey of over 400 farmers and conversations with dozens of agri-food professionals, and proposes solutions like policy adjustments and market development to foster a more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.
